What to Check in a Water Main Replacement Estimate

Before comparing water main replacement prices, compare the written scope. Check where the proposed line will run, what work is included and how the disturbed area will be left.

A DMS Plumbing estimate provides an example. This was proposed work, not a completed replacement or a confirmed customer approval.

Route and connections

The proposed line ran from the meter to the front of the house. An estimate should identify the connection points and describe the replacement work. If irrigation or other branches connect along the route, ask how they will be handled.

Access and restoration

This example included cutting and removing a section of concrete and disposing of the removed material. Concrete repair was excluded, and the proposed backfill was a rough finish.

Before approving a scope, clarify what will be removed, what will be restored and who will handle any excluded surface repairs.

Shutoff and installation details

The proposed scope included raising the main shutoff above grade, a permit, tracer wire and sleeving. Requirements depend on the property and the work proposed, so ask your plumber to explain the details of your own estimate.

A replacement estimate describes planned work. It does not, by itself, establish the location or cause of an underground leak. Keep any diagnostic findings separate from the proposed replacement scope. If the leak location hasn’t been confirmed, our leak detection service can help locate it first.
